Ice-enriched Loess and the Formation of Periglacial Terrain in Mid-utopia

چکیده

Introduction: In recent work [1-3] we used all relevant HiRISE (High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment), MOC (Mars Orbiter Camera), THEMIS (Thermal Emission Imaging System) and CTX (Context Camera) images in mid Utopia Planitia (UP; ~3060 0 N; Fig. 1) to map flat-floored and scalloped depressions, small-sized (~150m) polygonal patternedground and polygon-junction/trough pits (Fig. 2a). On Earth, similar landscape-assemblages are periglacial in origin and indicative of ice-rich permafrost (ground that is permanently frozen for at least two years) [4-5] (Fig. 2b).

Concentric crater fill in Utopia Planitia: History and interaction between glacial “brain terrain” and periglacial mantle processes

a r t i c l e i n f o a b s t r a c t At martian mid-to-high latitudes, the surfaces of potentially ice-rich features, including concentric crater fill, lobate debris aprons, and lineated valley fill, typically display a complex texture known as " brain terrain, " due to its resemblance to the complex patterns on brain surfaces. In order to determine the structure and developmental history of c...

“blebby” Terrain and Domes on the Northern Plains of Mars: Evidence of Ancient Ice Ages?

Introduction: In recent years, a number of researchers have recognized signs of past glacial activity on Mars and features that could be extant rock glaciers [1,2]. There has also been the recognition of " pasted on " terrains which are interpreted as dust-covered snow or ice deposits [3]. Many of these features are attributed to relatively recent (within the last several million years) periods...

Pedestal crater heights on Mars: A proxy for the thicknesses of past, ice-rich, Amazonian deposits

Mid-latitude pedestal craters on Mars offer crucial insights into the timing and extent of widespread icerich deposits during the Amazonian period. Our previous comprehensive analysis of pedestal craters strongly supports a climate-related formation mechanism, whereby pedestals result from impacts into ice-rich material at mid latitudes during periods of higher obliquity. The ice from this targ...

Application of Landsat-7 satellite data and a DEM for the quantification of thermokarst-affected terrain types in the periglacial Lena–Anabar coastal lowland

Extensive parts of Arctic permafrost-dominated lowlands were affected by large-scale permafrost degradation, mainly through Holocene thermokarst activity. The effect of thermokarst is nowadays observed in most periglacial lowlands of the Arctic. Since permafrost degradation is a consequence as well as a significant factor of global climate change, it is necessary to develop efficient methods fo...
